The house was an enigma, a labyrinth woven from shadows and secrets. We weren’t sure if we owned it or if it owned us—its temporary caretakers, destined to occupy its halls for reasons unclear. Yet, somehow, it felt as though it had always been waiting for us. My wife and I moved through its rooms with an unsettling mixture of familiarity and unease, like actors in a play whose lines had been long forgotten, ad-libbing their way through each scene.
The kitchen was my sanctuary, a place where I could escape into the rhythm of chopping, stirring, and sizzling. The space was peculiar—partitioned by heavy, velvet curtains that concealed more than they revealed. Behind those curtains lay a closed door, one that opened into a hallway I rarely explored. Even now, it remained a mystery in a house full of them.
